We are not likely to encounter Hinkypunks.  But Dementors are 
different.  As I understand it, JKR 'invented' Dementors during a 
period of depression, as an objectification or visualisation of her 
experience.  As a result I find them very effective fictional beings, 
but I imagine they are all too real for many people.

I know what it's like to get a bit of bad news and for the life and 
colour to be drained out of all he good things in life because of 
it.  But for that to happen with no apparent cause is horrifying.

I think the secret of the Patronus is a real one, and well worth 
learning.  To what extent is Harry JKR's Patronus?

I found the description of the Lethifold in FB quite frightening and 
nightmarish; it intrigues me that that, too, is repulsed by the 
Patronus.  What is the story there, I wonder?
