Being in the house kitchens sounds like a dangerous place to hide.
The house elves are magical creatures. They probably have the power
to dispose of pests like rats with the wave of a hand.

Hagrid's house, on the other hand, doesn't sound like the kind of
place that gets a thorough scrubbing very often and has lots of
places to lurk.

Probably not. He can probably just skulk around like rats do. Also,
we know from GoF that Peter can communicate with his little rat
buddies, so they probably tipped him off on the safest passage from
the castle to Hagrid's hut.

Oh, no. I like the fact that Wormtail/Pettigrew/Scabbers has so many
identities. First, if anyone overhears a DE refer to "Wormtail",
they won't necessarily learn that Peter is still alive. Also, it
seems logical that Voldemort would call him Wormtail, which is a
rather nasty name.
