Also, the number of children writing. I find it amazing the amount of 
fan fiction on the net, especially by children, inspired by Harry 
Potter. It'll be interesting, in the next few decades, to see how 
many newly published authors cite HP as their first inspiration.  

Even for those who never want to be an author, the practice of 
putting thoughts down on paper, trying to make coherant stories, will 
at the least make better readers of them, not to mention report 
writers in school and work.
