I don't see any holes, but I can give a potentially provocative 
answer to why Voldemort did not need to kill Lily.  Perhaps one only 
obtains a boost to one's power by killing men, not women.  Perhaps a 
woman's power cannot be taken.  Instead, women give their power 
and "protection" voluntarily, the way Lily gave her protection to 
Harry.  So maybe Voldemort did not get stronger by killing Lily (or 
Bertha Jorkins).

Hey, it's a theory.
