Hi all.  New to the list.

I think it likely that the hat does.  We have no reason to believe 
that it doesn't, since we only have Harry's point of view, but why 
would Harry be unique in this regard?  Some of the students -- like 
Neville, for instance, who had the hat on for a long time -- most 
probably did.  Why else would it take so long?  Surely the hat can 
make an analysis quickly if it can magically read your mind: however, 
if the student himself is quite conflicted about what he wants, or 
what he believes he needs to do, then there may be the long gap which 
signifies some "conversation" with the hat.
