Harry could easily be the heir of Gryffindor by blood even if the Hat did
consider him for Slytherin. Just because he's Godric's descendant doesn't
automatically make him Gryffindor (the House) material, even if he is a
Gryffindor by blood. One of the themes of the books is that your family does
not matter. It is stressed over and over that your family and bloodline isn't
important and is not indicative of what you are like. Hagrid is half-giant
but he certainly isn't as dangerous, Hermione is a muggle-born but one of the
best underage witches around, Dumbledore tells off Fudge for putting too much
importance in bloodline . . . Harry could easily have been sorted into
Slytherin and still be the heir of Gryffindor.

And while we're on the topic of heritage and ancestary, what about Tom
Riddle's mother? She was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin but obviously
didn't believe in the same things he did or her son does. She married a
muggle and still loved Tom Sr. enough after he left to name her son after
him. I think that she probably wasn't in Slytherin even though she was
Slytherin's descendant. Any thoughts?
