Because of a prophecy? And - um... I think that Dumbledore might be 
descendant to Gryffindor - and the great-great-grandfather to most of the 
students at Hogwarts. (Suppose he and his wife(Amalia Earhart?) had about 
7-12 children, they didn't marry their siblings but others, and each had 
lots of kids - 50 grandchildren - they didn't marry their cousins... 400-500 
great-grandchildren ... ends up to 3000 Dumbledore's 
great-great-grandchildren at most... And - Voldemort may be among his 50 
grandchildren and Minerva McGonagall as well.
Since AD is about 150 this might be true - and his supposed desire for socks 
- and sweet-passwords, well - self-knitted socks is something one gives to 
one's grandfather - while the Headmaster gets books... He'd just wish for 
someone to share his idea of being the sweet grandfather...

My idea too - Gryffindor- XXX - Dumbledore - XX James - Harry. I also think 
that Harry may be the bloodrelative of all founders.

Voldemort was just busy trying to kill Harry - even James wasn't his primary 
target. He may have planned to kill Lily later, after having her suffer by 
seeing her son die...

A big big family - with all but Harry dead. (And I still want to consider 
Dumbledore as great-greatgrandfather of Harry's - and most of the students 
at Hogwarts...)
