I'm actually starting to wonder if Olivander is overstating the case
a bit when he says you won't get good results with another wizard's
wand. There are lots of instances of wizards getting mighty fine
results with other wizards' wands. Fake Moody teaches all year,
places Imperius Curses on people, kills and tortures spiders, bounces
Malfoy, and Stuns Fleur, all presumably with real Moody's wand.
Sirius uses Snape's wand to good effect in PoA, even conjuring
manacles. Pettigrew Stuns Ron and Crookshanks with Lupin's wand.
Pettigrew uses Voldemort's wand for all sorts of things, including
Adavra Kedavra. Crouch Jr. uses Harry's wand to fire the Dark Mark.
Ron uses Charlie's wand. Perhaps wands don't have to be as "custom"
as Olivander suggests.
I think that for the most part a wand is a wand, and any wizard can cast
most, if not all, spells using any wand. However, I also think that since
each wand is slightly different, each wand must have subtle differences in
magical powers that would suit different people. For example, just as
certain people would have propensities for different areas of magic, such as
charms or transfiguration, different wands are better when used for certain
kinds of magic (Lily's, for example, was excellent for charm work--and by
that many of us have concluded that Lily must have been good at Charms).
Each wizard also must have a different degree of power and talent, and his
or her wand would probably correspond to that as well. Didn't Ollivander
say that Voldemort's wand was extremely powerful? More powerful than usual,
probably. That makes sense, since Voldemort was an extremely powerful
wizard. So, while I think that any wizard can do magic with just about any
wand, it seems that having the "wand choose the wizard" is a pretty good
idea.
