"Well, Charlie works with Dragons. Large beasts that breathe fire and
would probably burn a normal wand to ashes as they are made of wood.
I think that when Charlie went off to Romania, he gave Ron his wand
and got a new one with an enchantment of some sort or special
material for his profession."
~ Calypso
Just a thought.
The books frequently mention that Ron's family barely has enough
money to make ends meet. Doesn't it make sense that when Charlie
goes out on his own, earning his own money, he would leave his old
wand for one of his siblings and purchase a new one for himself? He
would be sparing his parents an additional expense and probably, as
Calypso said, buying a wand more suited for work with dragons, which
he wouldn't have needed at Hogwarts.
