would probably burn a normal wand to ashes as they are made of wood. 
I think that when Charlie went off to Romania, he gave Ron his wand 
and got a new one with an enchantment of some sort or special 
material for his profession."

Just a thought.

The books frequently mention that Ron's family barely has enough 
money to make ends meet.  Doesn't it make sense that when Charlie 
goes out on his own, earning his own money, he would leave his old 
wand for one of his siblings and purchase a new one for himself?  He 
would be sparing his parents an additional expense and probably, as 
Calypso said, buying a wand more suited for work with dragons, which 
he wouldn't have needed at Hogwarts.
