Dear Bob,
Ha! Ha! Do you think you will get an unbiased survey asking us? :)
I'm sure I speak for the majority when I say not only is this book 
appropriate, but it should be MANDATORY! :)

As for ages, that is a trickier question. I started reading all the 
books to my four year old (who just turned five), but I skipped the 
scarier bits or modified them as I read. We also read the books all 
out of order, because narrative structure isn't exactly a priority 
for a five year old (e.g. Let's read the part with Norbert again, 
Mom!"). In terms of reading the books on one's own, I'd say from 
whatever age they are able to (likely what, 8 or 9, younger with the 
percocious ones) to about, say 104? :)
