I certainly think they're appropriate for a child...however, I would
start with book one at about age 9-10 and let the child 'grow' with
the books. So book two for ages 10-11, three for 11-12, four for 12-
13, and so on. Book three and four may be too much for a 9-10 year
old to handle.
I became hooked when I bought my 8 year old Godson book 1...started
reading it on the plane when going out to visit. Told the kid he'd
get it when I was done and when I got home, bought #1 and 2 for
myself. I will confess to being one of those folks in line at
midnight for book 3 and 4.
I'm 33 and don't have kids. I borrow the neighbors' kids to justify
having HP in the house. (also when I want to talk HP...good thing I
found this board!)
