I certainly think they're appropriate for a child...however, I would 
start with book one at about age 9-10 and let the child 'grow' with 
the books.  So book two for ages 10-11, three for 11-12, four for 12-
13, and so on.  Book three and four may be too much for a 9-10 year 
old to handle.

I became hooked when I bought my 8 year old Godson book 1...started 
reading it on the plane when going out to visit.  Told the kid he'd 
get it when I was done and when I got home, bought #1 and 2 for 
myself.  I will confess to being one of those folks in line at 
midnight for book 3 and 4.

I'm 33 and don't have kids.  I borrow the neighbors' kids to justify 
having HP in the house.  (also when I want to talk HP...good thing I 
found this board!)
