I think there's a subtle difference between "they're just children's
books" and a recognition by the author that a major portion of the
audience is children, though. There may be some merit in the
latter. Even though JKR didn't necessarily write for children (as
per her own description) it does appear that she still plans on
maintaining children as part of her target audience. I believe in
the "authorized" biography, she mentions that she believes that
children of 8 could still read all the way to the end of the series
without it being "inappropriate" for them.
