Hi, I am new, but I thought I would jump in on this question. 
I don't think there is anything wrong either with HP being classified as 
children's lit, especially the first 2 books. However I do not think books 3 
or 4 are really children's fiction - I think they are more young adult 
fiction.  In YA fiction, there can be story lines dealing with much grittier 
subjects (homelessness, drug abuse, sexuality, etc).   YA is more for a teen 
audience, which is where many of the kids who started reading a couple of 
years ago will be. 

I think maybe the reason HP books are immediately thought of as for children 
is because when you read them, you get that exciting feeling of release you 
did when you first found out that books can take you to places you could 
never imagine existed.  And while there is a lot of good adult fiction to 
read, it doesn't always take you to those wonderful places.
