I don't think there is anything wrong either with HP being classified as
children's lit, especially the first 2 books. However I do not think books 3
or 4 are really children's fiction - I think they are more young adult
fiction. In YA fiction, there can be story lines dealing with much grittier
subjects (homelessness, drug abuse, sexuality, etc). YA is more for a teen
audience, which is where many of the kids who started reading a couple of
years ago will be.

>I think maybe the reason HP books are immediately thought of as for children
is because when you read them, you get that exciting feeling of release you
did when you first found out that books can take you to places you could
never imagine existed. And while there is a lot of good adult fiction to
read, it doesn't always take you to those wonderful places.

Hi Michelle, I would tend to agree - the books are certainly changing in character as Harry grows older, and could be classfied as either, and I don't really think it matters as long as they are great stories. At the risk of having 'OT' fingers pointed at me, I would like to say I was reading Isaac Asimov, Arthur Clarke, and JR Tolkien (and not just the Hobbit) at age 10, as well as more 'normal' books for that age group, and now at age 27, am quite happy to read those or any other authors, including Enid Blyton or Michael Bond etc, as long as the stories are fun. I started reading Harry Potter because my 12 year old friend was engrossed in them, but I think they will be like the Narnia books - I loved them as a child, and each time I read them as I get older I find a deeper layer in them.

:-) back to lurking!
