I find it odd, in this discussion, I've never once heard anyone bring 
up the words Voldemort spoke to the Death Eaters upon his 
ressurection: which I thought were pretty clearly pointed towards 
Karkaroff and Snape.  Paraphrasing here:

One lacked the courage to come back.  He will be punished 
[Karkaroff].  One, I suspect, has left me forever.  He will be killed 
of course. [Snape]  Am I alone in drawing these connections?
