I think you have it backwards, because Karkaroff put so many DEs and
other supporters in Azkaban. Snape obviously went back to Voldemort
that night, but Karkaroff went on the run. I'm sure Snape sweet talked
his way out of too much punishment by mentioning the fact that he was
next to Dumbledore and Fudge and could apperate until he they were
done sending him around.

I believe the next book will start off with Karkaroff dead...
