I am starting to think that the teachers really just live right there 
in their offices during the school year.  In GoF, in "The Egg and the 
Eye", Harry meets up with Snape, Moody, and Filch on the stairs.  It 
is the middle of the night.  At the end of the chapter, Harry and 
Moody part company, with Moody going into his office.

In PoA, Lupin curls up in his office to become a harmless wolf.

In GoF, Harry seeks out Dumbledore (at night, I believe) by going to 
Dumbledore's office.
