Yup, there's definitely something going on with that darn toad. If
there isn't, I'm going to be mightily annoyed because Trevor gets a
lot of attention.
Here's my unsupportable Trevor theory. Trevor cannot be another
animagus, as we've seen that before with Scabbers/Sirius/Rita, and
JKR won't dust that one off again.
I think Trevor is a "vessel" containing something important. Perhaps
Trevor carries the consciousness of Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom or
Neville. If it is Mr. or Mrs. Longbottom, then they aren't really
insane; their conscious selves are embodied in Trevor. That would
explain why Neville is so anxious about the whereabouts and well-
being of his silly little toad.
Or perhaps when the DEs broke in, Mrs. Longbottom transferred
Neville's memory into Trevor to protect Neville. Or perhaps the DEs
who tortured Neville's parents transferred his memory of what
happened into Trevor to protect themselves against being
identified. Neither of these theories works for me, however,
because I think Neville was too young to remember anything, so all of
this hocus pocus would have been rather pointless.
