Although Hagrid had the longest wand, his wand was broken in half.  

Rowling studies mythology, and mythology uses symbolism.  I think 
wand length symbolizes its wizard's power.  I don't think wand length 
is completely meaningless in the books.  The length must serve some 
purpose in the books (so are the wand material and quality.)
