I've wondered about the role debt and favor play in the Wizarding world myself. It seems to take on an almost mystical, spiritual significance -- Snape took his life-debt to James/Harry very seriously indeed; it has cost him more than half his lifetime in resentment. We surmise that the life-debt had some part to play in his defection from the Dark Eaters.
