Well, I think that during Voldemort's first rise MWPP, McGonagall and 
others were all part of an alliance against Voldemort. Lupin would 
want to learn the Patronus spell as a form of a protection, as he 
can't turn into an animal at will and escape a dementor easily like 
the rest.
