Then how come Hermione was able to check the Animagus registry so easily in 
PoA?

become animals; there's a register showing what animal they become, andt heir 
markings and things...and I went and looked Professor McGonagall up on the 
register..."  

Then again, I could see Hermione looking tediously through roles of parchment 
and doing tons of research to find this, but I can also imagine her just 
picking up a book, flipping to the right page and finding it.

Of course, the werewolf registry may be another thing. It may not be as 
accessable as the Animagus registry *might* be.
