Potters

Does anyone know why Voldemort wanted to *specifically* wipe out the Potters?

In PoA, Harry hears his mother pleading with V not to kill Harry, and V saying "Out of the way, you stupid girl!" That implies, to me, that he wasn't after Lily at all and, in fact, may not have WANTED to kill her (otherwise, why not just blast through her and kill the kid at the same time?)

Then later Sirius says that it must have been the high moment of Pettigrew's life when he could hand V "the last of the Potters."

What's up with that? Hopefully, THAT will be a major element in the coming book!
