<<f Harry hadn't gone after Snape and arrived at the mirror with 
Quirrel, the bad guys would never had gotten access to the stone.  It 
was only because Harry showed up that the stone came out of the 
mirror.  Therefore, Harry should have just stayed in Griffindor tower 
where he belonged.

My thoughts exactly.  I was thinking about it this weekend.  The only
idea I could come up with as to why Harry needed to risk life and limb,
was if Voldemort or Quirrell would have figured it out.  Then Quirrell
would have only wanted to find it and he would have gotten the stone.  So
perhaps Harry was needed to get it before they did.
