To nitpick the nitpick, Lily wasn't a Potter by blood.  Thus Voldemort
could kill the "last of the Potters" and still let Lilly live.  No doubt
using Avada Kedavra takes some energy, and he may have wanted to save it
by not killing anyone he didn't absolutely have to.
