Many facts Harry learns about his family since he has entered Hogwarts 
are painful or disturbing: horrible details of his parents' death, 
their friend's treachery, Petunia's jealousy of Lily, Snape's hatred 
of James etc.
Maybe, Harry never asks anybody about his family history, because he 
is afraid (subconsciously) of what else he might learn...  There must 
have been more cans of worms there... And Harry might not be ready to 
face them just yet.
