Many facts Harry learns about his family since he has entered Hogwarts
are painful or disturbing: horrible details of his parents' death,
their friend's treachery, Petunia's jealousy of Lily, Snape's hatred
of James etc.
Maybe, Harry never asks anybody about his family history, because he
is afraid (subconsciously) of what else he might learn... There must
have been more cans of worms there... And Harry might not be ready to
face them just yet.
