Patronus charm

I have just been listening to PoA and wondering about the Patronus 
spell. This seems to be a very complex and difficult spell to have to 
learn just to drive away Dementors. After all, how many people in the 
wizarding world would have contact with Dementors on a day-to-day (or 
even year-by-year) basis. Dementors are not the sort of things you 
would run across in the street. Remus is clearly well versed in how 
this spell is performed and even taking into account he is the DaDA 
teacher, I wonder if he has found other uses for it.

So does the creation of a Patronus have many more uses? Can it drive 
away other Dark things (eg Death Eaters)? Could it be used to hold back 
somone like Voldemort? Will it feature in future books to defeat other 
things? Or could Harry find himself in Azkarban at some point, needing 
his Patronus to prevent the Dementors from giving him the Kiss!
