According to "Fantastic Beasts and where to find them", the Patronus 
Charm is the only possible defense against the Lethifold, a shadow-
like creature, that attacks sleeping wizards - of course, a Patronus 
Charm is quite difficult in that state, so I wonder how many wizards 
actually have able to save themselves that way.
