In my schooldays (at least 10 years ago!) were what the day was split into 
for timetable reasons.

You would have two periods of  1/2 hr each before morning break of 15 
minutes, then another two periods before Lunch/Dinner.  Then the same again 
in the afternoon with an afternoon break.

So Double Potions would be a Potions lesson that spanned two periods.  YOu 
could also have lessons that spanned a single period as well.
