I'm glad I'm not the only one that's noticed that. I think I read in an
interview once that JKR said there were about 1000 students at Hogwarts.
Later when discussing the movie, I think she changed and said there were
about 400. She probably realized, like a lot of us, that 1000 students would
be impossible. That school would be severely under staffed. Even if all the
teachers used time turners, they would never sleep or have any sort of free
time. Their days would be ridiculously long. That and Harry's house and year
would be extremely small compared to all other years and houses (5
Gryffindor boys, about 3 Gryffindor girls as far as we know, for starters).
Of course, I can't actually say if my memory is even remotely accurate! -
