JKR said there were about 1000 students at 
Hogwarts.

Now me again:
400 hundred students would be about right. That would be 100 people 
per house, 15 per year, and 8 boys. That fits my vision of hogwarts a 
lot better, considering only about 2 fourth year girl in Gryffindor 
have been mentioned.
