Why not use Avada Kedravra? They were going to use their wands, so
this would have been the obvious curse to use. I'm pretty sure that
at this point, they didn't even think of clearing Sirius' name, that
only came later after Harry stopped them and talked them into bringing
Wormtail in. The only thing Sirius could think about at this moment
was to kill Peter to lift the threat off Harry. Peter was officially
dead, so nobody would miss him, they just would have needed to get
rid of the body somehow.

Yes, but the plot required that he escaped to assist Voldemort in
his resurrection a year later. ;-) He also had to fulfil Trelawney's
second prediction. It was also a bit stupid to chain Ron to him
with his broken leg, because he wasn't of much use like this. But
it was necessary to give Sirius the opportunity to talk to Harry
in private. Oh well, it's not very logical, but that's how Ms. Rowling
wrote her story.
