Well, Harry spared Pettigrew's life, and Dumbledore hinted that
Pettigrew would ultimately repay Harry in some way.
Pettigrew's role reminded me of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings, the
little creature who had been twisted by the One ring for but in the
end (unwillingly and unwittingly) destroy the ring. Bilbo spared
Gollum's life in The Hobbit, and Gandalf predicted that Gollum would
ultimately play a part in helping Frodo (Bilbo's nephew and
successor) fulfilling his quest.
