Ironically, I found the wizard community to be remarkably tolerant - 
look at the world cup where everyone seems to be getting along 
(outside of the whole DE situation,) or the diverse student body of 
Hogwarts.  Dumbledore says (in CoS IIRC) that anyone who wishes to 
study at Hogwarts is welcomed to do so, and the student body is 
accommodating (for the most part.)

Naturally there are exceptions like the Malfoys, but most seem to be 
like Hagrid, Dumbledore and the Weasleys in feeling that background 
makes no difference, it's all about applying yourself.
