Evil female character & Sirius as Auror

I think they are referring either to Rita Skeeter or Mrs. Lestrange.
I'd say Mrs. Lestrange is about as evil as you can get, so JKR must
be thinking of her.

I don't think Sirius could have been an auror. In GoF, he doesn't
seem to understand what the dark mark on Karkaroff's arm was. Also,
Sirius says, "As far as I know, Snape was never even accused of being
a Death Eater." An auror would know Snape had been accused of being
a DE and had the dark mark on his arm; Moody certainly did.
I would guess that Sirius' pre-Azkaban occupation involved something
having to do with transfiguration, as he seems pretty good at that.
Given that Peter was able to hoodwink Sirius so thoroughly, I'd say
Sirius' strengths are not in the area of law enforcement and
intelligence gathering.
