Hermione seems that way on the surface because we don't really know
any Ravenclaws (how come the Gryffindors have classes with the
Hufflepuffs and Slytherins so often, but not the Ravenclaws?)
Hermione, especially as the books move forward, really moves away
from the "studious" stereotype by a million light-years: and she
definately shows her bravery as much as Harry, Ron or anyone else in
the house on *regular* occasions. It's also clear that Hermione,
although she values studying and "the rules" can change in a
heartbeat if it turns out that something else is more important.
She's really a girl with her head on straight and her priorities
sorted out well. I think she (and Percy, for that matter, although
we don't know him as well) exemplify in many ways what Gryffindor is
about as much even as Harry does.

Yes, but Riddle also calls his mother a Muggle, which isn't true. I
believe that is hyperbole on Riddle's part more than anything.
