I also find Lupin's explanations of why the dementors seem to be
giving Harry a hard time to be a little unconvincing. Add in
Dumbledore's statement to Fudge that the dementors can't be trusted
to guard Voldemort's most dangerous supporters, and Dumbledore's
general dislike of Dementors, and I think they have it in for Harry.
Going forward, though, I have trouble imagining how JKR is going to
continue to have dementors present a threat to Harry, as he can ward
off huge numbers of them with a single Patronis. I suppose they will
have to suck souls out of minor characters for the remainder of the
books.
Also, had the dementors succeeded in kissing Harry in PoA, that
wouldn't necessarily kill the re-birthing party. Voldemort could
still use Harry's blood, because Harry would still be alive.
