Luke, this is terrific.  I have to take a minute (or perhaps a few 
days) to digest this before I'd have any hope of responding.  

In the meantime, I pledge not tempt you write any more big, 
interesting, thought-provoking, well-reasoned, sleep-depriving essays 
about creative writing techniques in HP.  Well, unless I think of 
something really important to ask, anyway.  Besides, we've covered 
all conceivable creative writing techniques and issues at this point, 
haven't we?  <bg>
