A good question actually, what possessed Dumbledore
to accept this empty blowhard as DADA instructor?
One might speculate....We have been told Dumbledore
has a vain streak, (one might guess this for oneself
what with the flowing hair and robes and his praise of
his own brilliance) it is possible he sees something
of himself in Gilderoy Lockhart. Dumbledore has
mastered his vanity, it is no more than an endearing
weakness that helps humanize the 'greatest living
wizard'. Gilderoy on the other hand has been mastered
by it and all but destroyed himself as a person and a
wizard. Dumbledore may have hired Lockhart in the hope
he could help him but was distracted by the Basilisk
and other crises.
I have already commented that the memoryless
Lockhart seems a much nicer person. Thanks to Ron's
malfunctioning wand Gilderoy now has a chance to
literally start over from the begining - and maybe
become a better man than he was.
