I have to say, I don't think Snape ever wanted to be DADA teacher. If he
did, wouldn't Dumbledore have chosen him over Lockhart (who was the only
candidate for the position in CoS)? Also, the first time we (Harry and the
reader) hear that Snape is evil is at the start of year feast in PS, when
Percy says "That's Professor Snape. Knows an awful lot about the Dark
Arts, does Snape." (or words to that effect), and possibly also says that
Snape wants to be DADA teacher (I'm not sure since I don't have the book
in front of me).
IMHO, Snape is perfectly happy where he is as Potions Master (which is
supported by the discussion about how Snape's personality goes along well
with the discipline of Potions). Which leads to the question: Why does
Percy think Snape wants to be DADA teacher?
