You forgot that Draco told him he had seen Harry's head near the Shrieking Shack! It wasn't difficult to put two and two together after that!

One theory jumps to mind: It was, I think, originally James' cloak? I wouldn't be surprised if Snape recognised it immediately from his own runins with WMPP, put two and two together like lightning and jumped up and down with glee. In his mind. Any chance to expell that dispicable Potter boy would have him in fits...
