I speculate that Hagrid's umbrella is made from the wands of James
and Lily Potter. Why? Hagrid and Sirius were the first ones to get to
Godric's Hollow. Hagrid pulled infant Harry from the wreckage. I
imagine that Hagrid found Lily's wand and James wand among the
carnage and kept them for Harry. It might also explain the 24 hour
time gap between Hagrid leaving Godric's Hollow and arriving at
Privet Drive (unless Hagrid stopped for a drink along the way).

The magic Hagrid performs with the umbrella wasn't of the same low
caliber as Ron's broken wand magic in CoS. Hagrid's umbrella didn't
seem to malfunction as much and I don't think you can chalk it up to
Hagrid's experience with magic as he was expelled in his third year.
