 I really think that Hagrid's umbrella is made from the pieces of his 
own wand; In the scene where Harry is buying his wand Hagrid's 
gestures reveal where the pieces of his wand are. 
 About that 24 hour time gap; Would you fly with a giant motorcycle in 
daylight?
 About malfunctions; Ron's wand wasn't in perfect shape before it 
broke and it was his brother's old. (You never get as good results 
with somebody else's wand.)
