That's a good question.  You'd think that they would be able to visit 
the common rooms.  Especially with all the interhouse relationships 
going on.  Where else would Percy and Penelope have met up?  Or is 
sneaking off into empty classrooms considered to be the norm?  

I searched the Lexicon for 'common rooms' and it says that they are 
to be used for studying and socializing.  It doesn't specify 
socializing with house members only, but I think that it's implied.  
I pulled out my copy of CoS and in The Polyjuice Potion chapter, 
Harry/Crabbe and Ron/Goyle have to find their way to the Slytherin 
common room; "We've still got to find out where the Slytherin common 
room is.  I only hope we can find someone to follow..." Cos 218

That leads me to believe that common rooms are for strictly house 
members only.  Maybe only Prefects or Head Boy/Girls have visitation 
priviledges.  And you're right, that does make a good case for MWPP 
to have all been in the same house!
