Small note on Pettigrew as I seem to be one of his resident defenders (is there actually anyone but me?) I do believe Peter was in a house other then Gryffindor due to the fact that bravery is so often emphasized through out the books and Peter is not known in any form for bravery. He gave up his friends for his life and through out most of which we've seen him he's groveling, weather in PoA when he's begging everyone in the room for a defense and later in GoF groveling to Voldemort in various scenes either for a better job (which was of course given to another) or in regards to his hand.

On the other side, Peter could have a hidden depth. He could have been in Gryffindor, later betrayed James and Lily, groveled in every known scene of him and completely lead us astray so that when the great act of bravery comes we are completely shocked and actually have to read it several times to take it in. Bravery is a tricky thing. You can be brave and yet still be a coward. Betraying the Potters, wall an overly cowardly act does have some traits of bravery. He was exposing himself as a traitor. If caught he would be dead or sentenced to Azkaban. That in itself it a brave act if not a large on. He returned to Voldemort after abandoning him...a stupidly brave act inside a cowardly one. He asked for a better job, to get Harry for Voldemort. Again, brave act though motivated by ambitious means. There are numerous other brave acts he has done...using risky and illegal magic in the animagus transformations, the exploring needed to create 'The Marauders Map' and so on. And there could still be one final act, an act that defines him as Gryffindor.

While I don't think he will every truly be like the Potters, Sirius and Lupin, I do think he will give his life for Harry's in return for Harry's actions in PoA and in being true to himself.

So weather Gryffindor or other it's hard to say with Peter Pettigrew, time will only tell us what he was/is.

Rose:"Please forgive me if this has been discussed before."

Don't worry about it. Everybody has something new to contribute; just
read the VFAQ file. You'll know what's gone before and maybe inspire
new thoughts on the topic. Besides, I don't think this has been
discussed before, at least not much!

Rose:"Are the students ever permitted to visit each other in their
common rooms? I ask this question for several reasons. My first
thought was no as it was mentioned in GoF that those students
escorting those from other houses to the Yule Ball would meet them in
  the entrance hall..."

It would seem strange if they couldn't, but there's no evidence that
they do. Harry and Ron don't seem to know where other Houses'
entrances are. They had a hard time finding the Slytherin common room
in CoS, and when Cedric is going off towards his House it's kept
  vague.

If it's the case that there's little inter-house visiting, then it
would make sense there's someplace at Hogwarts where students in
various Houses can socialize at least a little, some sort of Student
Union. There's absolutely no evidence for it, though. Except for
dating at the Yule Ball, the kids all seem to keep to their House.

That doesn't seem to fit in with Dumbledore's vision for the school,
but traditions are hard to change. As the Second Voldemort War heats
up, will Dumbledore act to unify the school more? I hope this unity
doesn't happen because Death Eaters crash something into Hogwarts.

I agree that MWPP were all the same house, so they would be
Gryffindors. Pettigrew is the only one I have a hard time believing
is a Gryffindor. Could he be an exception?
