Possibly it just means an extremely powerful wizard.  A bit OT, but 
Terry Pratchett develops a sourcerer as the eighth son of an eighth 
son (born, not made), and the sourcerer has more power than many top 
wizards put together.  "Wizards' Stone" doesn't come across right, 
and IMO would indicate that any 'ol wizard can come up with such a 
contraption.  Still strange that the title was changed, though.
