I don't recall JKR ever saying if the Potters were famous while 
alive. I imagine that they were known to many friends and associates 
because the Potters were (I think) an old wizarding family and James 
and Lily had been Head Boy and Head Girl (I think at the same time), 
but the only Fame they had was whatever fame James had kept from 
being a star Quidditch player at school (assuming that he WAS a star 
player -- in PoA, Lupin said: "[Snape] especially disliked James.
Jealous, I think, of James's talent on the Quidditch pitch... " and 
why would Severus be so jealous if James's talent was nothing 
special?)
