Actually, that explains quite a lot, doesn't it?  Sirius tells us 
that his emotions were less complex as a dog.  Also, Lupin mentions 
that Pettigrew might not have been able to catch the whole shrieking 
shack conversation while he was "squeaking around down there on the 
bed."

But then, how does Rita Skeeter remember the things she witnesses 
while she is in her beetle state and has no quick quotes quill?  And 
if Krum performs a partial animagus transformation in the second 
task, and his head is a shark head, how does he have enough human 
brainpower left in him to know that Hermione is not brunch?
