    Judging by Fairy Tales terrible things do indeed
happen to people who refuse to fulfil magical
obligations. Dumbledore did warn the students that
that there could be no withdrawing after their name
was picked. The fact that the obligation was forced
upon Harry by trickery unfortunately doesn't make any
difference to the blind forces of Magic. We can only
assume that it would have been more dangerous for
Harry to *not* compete than to compete or Dumbledore
would never have allowed it.
