Wormtail & the wand - # of students

Sorry for posting so many times in one night but I keep remembering stuff
from PoA.

1. We've made the argument many times already that when a wizard
transforms, he takes his wand with him.

But when Peter grabbed Ron's wand upon coming out from the Whomping
Willow and transfigured himself back into a rat, I don't think he took
the wand with him.

I also thought all along that an animagus does not need a wand to
transform.

So now I am confused.

2. In regards to the argument of how many students there were at Hogwarts
- 280 vs. 1000, there is one place in PoA where it becomes clear that
there were 1000, not 280. At the Quidditch final in PoA, it says that
three-quarters of the crowd was cheering Gryffindor on, but 200 students
were wearing green and cheering for Slytherin. So if there seem to be 200
students per house, there are about 800 students -- round it off to 1000,
as there are probably 200 more squished in somehwere in the 4 houses.
